Mahindra e-Verito review: A full size electric car in India useful or not?

Mahindra e-Verito will soon join the government's vehicle fleet as a part of EESL tender. The company has already commenced the deliveries of its electric car. But is it really an easy going car for you to drive and commute everyday? Here are all the details on the electric car.

It all started for Mahindra in 2010 when the company acquired Reva electric car company and while the serious talks about e-mobility has just started in India, Mahindra had launched its first electric car Mahindra e20 in 2014. Slowly and steadily now the company has two cars in its portfolio and the Mahindra e-Veritoelectric car that has been around since 2016 is now being considered to lead the electric car race and is currently in-charge taking care of Mahindra’s domination in Indian electric car market. Mahindra Electric has commenced the deliveries of Mahindra e-Verito electric car to Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) in November 2017 as per the tender floated by state run department to procure electric cars for government offices. Going forward electric powertrain on existing platforms will be trend by almost all carmakers till the demand for electric cars goes up.
Mahindra e-Verito was first launched in 2016.

Mahindra E-Verito Design:

Mahindra e-Verito gets a decade old design but still continues to look fresh thanks to use of chrome which Indians love on their car (don’t know why!). The car still reminds of Mahindra-Renault Logan that later became the Mahindra Verito post the announcement of split between Mahindra and Renault in 2010. Later, the Verito got an electric revival with an electric motor and now will be supplied for the EESL tender running along with Tata Tigor electric. Mahindra e-Verito and TataTigor electric car will be the first electric cars to be deployed and be used by government official for daily commute and we had the chance to drive the e-Verito recently in and around the Mahindra Electric plant in Bengaluru.
Mahindra e-Verito electric car price: Rs 9.25 - 9.75 lakh (Ex-Delhi).
Mahindra e-Verito is spacious electric sedan with a huge boot space of 510L. The battery that supplies power to electric motor is place beneath the car that has allowed the car to be spacious. Electric badge at the rear and Mahindra Electric (ME+) on the side fast charging panel notifies (on top-end) the electric variant. While the overall appeal of the car is not new or unique the car is still decent looking. Fresh looks and upgrade will lead to increase in cost which at the moment is not good for the electric car market. E-Verito gets body coloured bumpers, door-handles and ORVMs and gets power windows.

Mahindra E-Verito Interiors:

Mahindra e-Verito gets nice and spacious interiors with dashboard finished in grey-beige hard plastic. The round A/C vents too are finished in silver accents and some chrome is used on the e-Verito badge in front of the passenger’s seat. There could have been a better finish of the gear knob. The dashboard also features a 2-DIN Audio system that features a USB and AUX port. Mahindra e2o plus does get a proper infotainment system, but to save costs on the e-Verito Mahindra decided not to carry forward the unit used in E2o plus.

Driving Electric Car In India:

Mahindra e-Verito review
Mahindra e-Verito that is being supplied to EESL and also on sale in many cities is powered by a 72V 3-phase AC Induction Motor that makes a power of 41 hp and 91 Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a direct drive single speed transmission. We had the chance to drive the electric car in and around an industrial area and the silent drive of the car almost surprised us. The car doesn’t feel heavy to drive despite having a gross weight of 1700 kgs and handles well in sharp turns. We manage to cross 80 kmph with ease and the boost mode instantly releases more power to the wheels increasing the fun quotient to drive an electric car. It is almost like you driving a go kart car.

Mahindra e-Verito also supports regenerative braking which means power is generated and send back to the vehicle while you braking (kinetic energy being converted into potential energy, physics). The top-variant D6 of Mahindra e-Veritoalso gets the option of fast charging. While the normal charging time of electric car is about 8-9 hours the fast charging takes less than 2 hours to give a full charge that lasts a range of 140 kilometers.

Charging Electric Cars:

We also tried our hands on charging the car and it was almost like charging a mobile phone. It gets 3 pin plug point and attaching the cable to the car is a child’s play. After having driven the e-Verito I believe that owning and using electric cars for less than 100 kilometers of commute every day on Indian roads is do able. While I’m not sure if 100 per cent electrification in mobility is achievable, I’m quite certain that electric cars is all set to take off in India in a big way and with more car companies coming we will see some intense competition in the electric car space.

Sedans like Mahindra e-Verito will soon be seen in the fleet of cab aggregators like Uber and Ola. Going forward major corporates will be looking to change its fleet to electric mobility to set an environment friendly examples and once the charging infrastructure is in place its only then we will see individual buyers opting for EVsMahindra e-Verito electric car is a perfect family sedan for everyday commute of less than 100 kilometers but will see its full potential only once the charging infrastructure is in place.
