Mahindra Electric is currently the only electric car manufacturer in India and on more than one occassion, the company shared its intentions to increase its EV portfolio and have a strong line-up. The company currently has Mahindra e2oPlus and Mahindra e-Verito electric cars in its product portfolio and Dr. Pawan Goenka, Managing Director, Mahindra & Mahindra has already confirmed that the electric variant of Mahindra KUV100 is in under development and will make its market launch by the end of 2018. Not only this, Mahindra will also be launching another electric car based on one of the company's existing products. The second new electric car should make its way into the showrooms by the end of 2019. Recent images of Mahindra KUV100 floating on internet claiming to be the electric version of the KUV100 has been recently spotted testing somewhere in Pune, while it cannot be confirmed if this is an actual electric version of KUV100, the absence of an exhaust pipe brings to light a healthy possibility that it might be the test mule of KUV100 electric.
Mahindra has also started the deliveries of its e-Verito for the EESL tender, the state-run organisation has claimed this procurement of electric cars to be the largest one of its kind in the world and while Tata Motors won the major share of the tender, Mahindra picked up 30% of the total 10,000 vehicles ordered in the tender. Mahindra has also confirmed that the company will bid in the second phase of procurement whose tender is expected to be floated in April 2018. Besides, the brand has also joined hands with Ford for the making of electric vehicles and the first product to roll out of the joint venture is expected to arrive before 2020. In the current scheme of things, one can clearly see that it is not just Mahindra but other automakers too, that are becoming serious towards the path of eco-friendly mobility. One prime reason for this is the Government of India's vision to make the country running completely on EVs by the year 2030.
Mahindra is not just focussing on humble mass-market cars. The Indian automaker has Pininfarina brand on its side that will be responsible for rolling out a high-end electric car and the launch will take place 'soon' as per Mahindra. However, the disappointing part is that the said Tesla challenger will not be launched in India as it will be priced on a higher side due to obvious reasons. The good part is that Mahindra's Chief, Pawan Goenka has hinted that the company will launch the car in India if there is enough demand.
Combining all these, one can clearly see that Mahindra is busy adding bricks to its electric car kingdom and looks ambitious towards the same. With other manufacturers joining in soon, we expect the overall ecosystem required towards e-mobility to increase substantially and we expect better coordination among various stakeholders including various central and state governments, component manufacturers, infrastructure providers and OEMs.
